CNC machining services are more commonly known as computer numerical control, and they are used to make parts that are strong, durable, and precise. This allows companies to create complex parts in high volume with little waste of material and time invested. CNC machining stainless steel takes three basic steps: design, manufacturing, and finishing. Each of these stages can be executed using stainless steel CNC machining services or other materials to suit your needs.
Why we use stainless steel
Stainless steel is a metal alloy with added iron, generally in amounts of at least 10%. As its name implies, stainless steel is resistant to corrosion (staining), which can occur when exposed to certain chemicals (especially salt water). When it does corrode, it forms a thin surface layer similar to iron oxide that can be easily removed. Also called inox steel or Inox-type steel.
The different types of stainless steel
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, carbon, and chromium. Here are some of its most popular forms 18-8: This type of stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
It’s commonly used in cookware because it’s highly resistant to corrosion—it can even be polished to a shine after being scratched or marred. 316: This type of stainless steel contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 3% molybdenum. It has similar qualities as 18-8 but it also has enhanced resistance to corrosion from salt water, making it ideal for use in marine environments such as boat propellers or fishing rods.
What are some common items made with stainless steel?
Think of stainless steel and your mind might leap to high-tech items like refrigerators or flatware. Stainless steel is also used in building, transportation, electronics and a variety of other industries.
Of course, it’s most common for stainless steel to be used for practical (and not so practical) kitchen tools and gadgets. That said, there are many types of stainless steel with varying properties that are designed for specific applications. For example, type 304 stainless steel is one of the most commonly produced grades because it has good corrosion resistance and formability.
It can also be used at high temperatures but may have some issues with cracking at low temperatures. Other grades include type 316L which has excellent corrosion resistance to seawater and freshwater as well as increased resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion in chloride environments when compared with type 304 stainless steel.
Type 316 has better mechanical properties than 304 at elevated temperatures but may be more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than 304 if exposed to sulfide environments such as found around oil wells or desalination plants.
